Short-Stay Business Visas (Subclass 456/956/977) 

Short-Stay Business visas include subclass 456 business visitor visas and subclass 956 and 977 business Electronic Travel Authorities (ETAs). These visas allow persons to enter Australia for business activities, usually for up to three months stay at a time. These visas are granted while candidates are outside Australia and provide authority to travel to Australia quickly - within minutes (for ETAs) or days (for 456 visas). These visas are generally available for persons to attend business meetings and discussions, attend a conference or training session, business negotiations, an exploratory business visit, establishing a business and the like. Generally, persons in Australia on business visitor visas may not undertake employment that would prejudice the employment opportunities of locals. These visas cannot be extended onshore.

Long-Stay Business Visas (Subclass 457)

The Long-Stay Business 457 visa (commonly known as a Work Permit) is valid for stays between 3 months and 4 years. This visa is used by Australian businesses that seek to employ highly skilled personnel from overseas. The position to be filled must require specialist or technical skills and/or knowledge and the visa applicant must be able to show that they have the education and/or work experience to fill this position.

Essentially there are three steps involved in a visa application of this type

Step 1

The company must apply for sponsorship approval.

Step 2

The company must nominate a position to be filled.

Step 3

The visa applicant must lodge a visa application.
